Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Recently, I spoke to you about the importance of helping to pave the parking lot on our Broad Street campus, a much needed and long neglected project.
There are many reasons why this project is necessary. Below are two major reasons:
1) Safety of our children: After delivering my talk on the pulpit, I came back to the sacristy. A mother and her two children came in to see me. With tears welled up in her eyes, she expressed her gratitude. She then pointed to her son's broken foot and stated that it happened when he stepped into one of those potholes in the parking lot. Right then, I realized that God had just sent me His "stamp of approval". We need to do everything in our power to protect our children’s minds, bodies, and spirits and the time is now, not tomorrow. Let us put a stop to any cheap talk and get to work. Let us make a promise to the Lord that we will not rest until we wipe the tears off our children’s faces. We are our “brother’s keeper” and whatever we do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we do it to Christ.
2) Unity of the Parish: After being a priest for seven years and being here for four, I realize that in every parish, there are divisions…there are different cliques. Unfortunately, the parishes are mainly split into 4 major groups: church, school, CCD, and CYO. People in their different cliques would generally support their own organization, talk negatively about the others, and being critical when it comes to doing things together for the benefit of the entire parish. This is a disease. Christ bore this disease when he was crucified on the cross and it continues to destroy the life and dynamic of the parish community. In the Gospel, before Christ departed this world, he prayed fervently for unity: "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me." (John 17:20-21) This project will definitely unites the entire parish together in a common goal. It is when we put aside our differences and learn to live and work with each other that is when we realize that we have grown in our maturity and our ability to set fine examples for the next generation to follow.
